Selling
Selling an artwork can be a difficult decision and in terms of estate planning the outcome can define not just the current generation but also the financial stability of future generations to come. For trustees and professional advisers it is a considerable responsibility to get it right and it is vital, in our opinion, that independent advice is sought which is tailored and is wholly and solely in the client’s best interests. We provide that independence and transparency which is by no means a guarantee when seeking art advice.
CREATING A BESPOKE SALE STRATEGY
Once we have discussed our client’s needs and expectations, we will work together to formulate a strategy that will maximise the financial result. Our bespoke advice will consider every option available, taking into account the various benefits of a sale at auction, or a sale to a private collector or one of the government’s tax remission schemes, such as Acceptance in Lieu of Inheritance Tax, a private treaty sale to an institution or a Cultural Gift. We have considerable experience and knowledge of how each of these options work and how and when to utilise the government incentives.
RESEARCH AND PRE-SALE PREPARATION
As well as producing a sale strategy, our scholarly research on the picture, the artist and the provenance can often help to enhance the sale price and broaden the painting’s appeal. Throughout our many years working in the art market we have established trusted relationships with museums, collectors and other advisers, creating a strong network of potential buyers. As part of our service, we will consider price, discretion, level of exposure to the market, timing and marketing. The presentation of the picture – whether to clean or re-frame it – is another strategic consideration to bear in mind.
