Henri Gaudier-Brzeska: A Life Cut Short
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska: A Life Cut Short
Killed in action, aged just 23, Gaudier-Brzeska was a pioneering artist who despite dying at such a young age, produced a remarkable body of work.
Lydia Wingfield-Digby tracks his brief career starting in France and discussing his move to the UK, where he worked alongside Jacob Epstein and Wyndham Lewis amongst others. She looks at his involvement in Britain’s first avant-garde movement – Vorticism, his contribution to the Omega Group and the influence of his work on the next generation of sculptors including Henry Moore.
The talk also considers the role of Jim Ede and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, in championing Gaudier’s reputation as one of the most significant sculptors in Britain at the beginning of the 20th Century.
