German Baroque and Rococo
German Baroque and Rococo
This period produced some of the most colourful and spectacular designs in architecture and furniture following the reconstruction of Europe after the end of the Thirty Year’s War in 1648.
A combination of aristocratic patronage demanded a palatial style, strongly influenced by French and Italian work.
From the hefty architectural cupboards supplied to the expanding merchant classes of the northern Hanseatic states, to the unfettered rococo extravagance of the south of Germany, a national style had asserted itself. This was expressed in unconventional and occasionally bizarre forms of often extraordinary fantasy, elaborate marquetry and lively carving.
