Great Auction Sales
Justin Roberts, Jewellery Historian and Specialist will look at how the great auction rooms of today started and how London became the centre of the Art market, from the sale of the goods of Charles I and his famous art collection by Parliament to the great sales of the 19th Century of the late Emperor Napoleon’s library, Strawberry Hill, Fonthill Abbey and Stowe.
Focusing on the great Georgian auction houses: Sotheby’s, Christies, Phillips and Bonhams and how they expanded during 18th Century London from Covent Garden to Mayfair; finishing on some of the glittering noble sales of the 20th Century: including those of the Duchess of Windsor, Jackie Kennedy and Vivien Leigh.
